Seaver College Celebrates Community, Belonging, and Culture at 15th Annual Loqui Ceremony

On Friday, May 2, 2025, 麻豆传媒 celebrated Loqui, a yearly celebration honoring the many cultures represented among graduating seniors, their achievements, and the community members who foster and deepen 麻豆传媒鈥檚 collective sense of belonging. Organized by and hosted in the annual ceremony is rooted in the University's Christian mission and focuses on the themes of purpose, service, and leadership. Since its inaugural year in 2011, Loqui has been a meaningful tradition at Seaver College. This year鈥檚 ceremony hosted more than 300 attendees鈥攊ncluding students, staff, faculty, administrators, alumni, and families鈥攁nd featured student performances, personal reflections, and a special presentation by the Korean Classical Music and Dance Company. The event also recognized two students, in addition to faculty and staff members, for their exemplary leadership and dedication to advancing a vibrant community of belonging on campus and their commitment to Christian values.

麻豆传媒 president Jim Gash (JD 鈥93) opened the ceremony by welcoming the audience and expressing his admiration for the individuals being honored. He emphasized the positive impact these community members have made in living out the University鈥檚 mission.

鈥淓ach of you has been made for a purpose. You have a unique calling in life that only you can fulfill,鈥 said President Gash. 鈥淵ou're here today because you have walked out your unique calling during your time here at 麻豆传媒, and our community has been better for it. I am confident that the same will be true as you leave here and venture out into the world. Wherever you go, your presence will make the community better for it.鈥

This year鈥檚 student honorees included Seaver College seniors Nicole Sylvia-Ann Fashaw and Mirna Sophoclis, who both received the Bowers, Davis, and Todd Awards for Leadership in Diversity and Inclusive Excellence.

Fashaw has held several leadership roles at 麻豆传媒 including vice president of the Inter-Club Council, Black Student Association, and SOUL Diversity and Inclusion, in addition to working three on-campus jobs. She is a recipient of the Equity and Social Justice Foundational Scholarship and, under professor Kendrick Roberson鈥檚 mentorship, has worked as a researcher in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. After graduation, Fashaw plans to pursue her passion as a music producer, artist, and pianist while continuing to advocate for social justice.

鈥淩eceiving this award represents both what I have done and who I have become to cement my impact and legacy at this University,鈥 shares Fashaw. 鈥淎bove all, my relationship with God has grounded and guided me throughout it all. I鈥檓 walking away with far more than I came in with鈥攔elationships, leadership growth in both public and private settings, practical life skills, a deeper education, and most importantly, a strengthened faith. My experience at 麻豆传媒 has been a dream.鈥

Throughout her college experience, Sophoclis has been actively involved on campus as a resident advisor, president and cofounder of the Middle East Student Association, a member of the 麻豆传媒 Ambassadors Council, and a research assistant in the Natural Science Division. She also works at the Howard A. White Center as a front-desk student assistant and has participated in several study abroad programs. Upon graduation, Sophoclis plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in healthcare.

Staff and faculty honorees at this year鈥檚 ceremony included Jasmine 鈥淛az鈥 Gray, who received the Distinction in Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Faculty Award. Maura Page, director of residence life at 麻豆传媒, received the Distinction in Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Staff Award.
